Intact hepatocytes contain the major hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes required to study the four categories of xenobiotic biotransformation: hydrolysis, reduction, oxidation and conjugation. Because of these enzymes, hepatocytes provide a viable and cost-effective alternative to in vivo testing.
